Chapel
All boys attend Chapel. Senior Primary boys attend a traditional Chapel service, on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning. Tuesday mornings is set aside for House Chapel while Thursday is Hymn practice in the Chapel. The Christian services are conducted along formal and traditional lines with boys participating in the reading of passages of scripture, singing of hymns, choruses and the Lord’s Prayer, and with the Headmaster and Deputy Head sharing a brief message before assembly notices are read out.
Foundation Phase boys attend ‘chapel’ services in the Lecture Theatre every day except Thursday when it is held in the Chapel. Parents are welcome to attend this latter Chapel service.
Mentoring
There is a Kool to Care mentoring initiative that has been running for some years. Boys are allocated KtC friendship groups that include one boy from each grade in the school in each group. Grade 7 boys lead these groups which meet on Tuesday mornings from 07.30 – 08.00 three times a term. The mentorship develops over time in each group as the senior boys get to know their juniors and as trust amongst those in the group grows. Boys stay in the same group throughout their time at Highbury.
Counselling
If it is thought that a boy might require some form of professional counselling then the school will advise and work with the parents to set up special counselling therapy sessions with professional educational, clinical or child behavioural psychologists. Many teachers have attended counselling courses with professional organizations at times when such professional in-service-training has been asked for.
Social awareness
The school is committed to raising awareness amongst its boys in areas within the immediate external community where other children, are seen to be in real need. Such exposure will often lead to some form of support for those concerned and for opportunities for our boys to get involved in raising money in support of a special enlistment project.
Highbury partners two disadvantaged Highway schools: the Foundation Phase has a very close friendship with Kwa-Thintwa School for the deaf; and the Senior Primary has been actively involved with upliftment projects at Ndlokolo Primary School.
Discipline
The Highbury teachers have always worked very hard with each successive generation of boys to instil in them an understanding of the traditional core values that underpin our mission and that serve to define all that we strive to achieve. At the centre of these is the inculcation of and participation in those key aspects that encompass self-discipline and respect in their broader sense.
