HIGHBURY ORCHESTRA IS 10 YEARS OLD – 2010

What a wonderful start to the new decade with Highbury orchestra celebrating its 10 th year.

The orchestra was started in 2001 to allow boys the opportunity to play their particular instrument with other boys. This is certainly a lot more fun than just always practicing and playing alone!

The orchestra usually includes strings, woodwind and percussion instruments. The brass section came into being in 2009 with our first trumpeter!

Orchestra numbers have grown over the years with an all time high by the end of 2009 with 30 boys playing at Speech night. Over the years the orchestra repertoire has included arrangements of classical.

Melodies as well as many pop songs. All time favourites have most certainly been “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, the Popcorn song and “Viva la Vida”.

The orchestra has been on several tours – to the Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, the Free State and has performed at many functions – Christmas carols at shopping centres, at a restaurant in Hillcrest,  Open Days to mention but a few.

Orchestra membership is open to any boy who has reached a level on his instrument where his teacher sees him fit to join. We certainly hope that the orchestra will continue to flourish and that boys will experience the never-ending joy of making music.
